medium_6349983_Mark_Miller__11_resizedEach month, ICBR honors one of its members as Member of the Month. This month, we recognize ICBR District 8 member, Mark J. Miller. Mark is a broker with ERA First Advantage Realty, Inc. in Evansville, Ind.

ICBR: Why are you an ICBR member? What do you look to gain out of membership?

Miller: I believe to be effective and have longevity in the commercial real estate business in a good or bad market, you need to have access to the most accurate and pertinent data that is available. Without reliable information, it is impossible to feel that you are giving your clients and associates the most current data needed to make wise business decisions. Being an ICBR member allows you direct contact with anyone on the staff and your other peers.

ICBR: How did you start your career in commercial real estate?

Miller: In 1981, I started a business that I owned for 23 years. The company grew from one employee (me) to 47 full-time employees. That particular time was not the best to jump start a business due to the economy, but the opportunity arose and I thought if I could make it now I would have a pretty good chance of survival. During the tenure of my business, I built several commercial buildings and developed a 13 acre industrial park. I sold the business in 2004, started in commercial real estate full time, and have not looked back.

ICBR: Do you have any mentors? If so, who? How has he/she inspired you?

Miller: I don’t necessarily have any mentors, but commercial real estate is no different than any other profession – you get out of it what you put in.

ICBR: What is the most important thing you have learned by working in commercial real estate?

Miller: Commercial real estate is somewhat unique due to the fact that there are so many variables and different ways to structure the deal, be it a lease, sale or a host of other possibilities. Working in commercial real estate has proven to me that you are relied on by your clients to have accurate information on current and past transactions, and ICREX is a tremendous provider of that data.

ICBR: What are your current professional goals?

Miller: One of my current professional goals is one that I’ve always had. Be the best you can, no matter what your occupation. Your reputation is worth more than any commission!

ICBR: Most recent accomplishment?

Miller: ICBR Member of the Month.

ICBR: Do you have any special skills/interests/hobbies?

Miller: Mountain climbing, triathlons, shark hunting, aeronautical engineer and an all-around good guy.
